What is vitiligo?
Vitiligo is a disorder in which one or more areas of skin loses its normal pigment (melanin) and becomes white. Vitiligo affects about 1 % of the population. The reason why vitiligo occurs is complex and not fully understood. A specific type of vitiligo is classified as autoimmune disease, in which the pigment cells are attacked and destroyed by the immune system. Vitiligo is equally common among men and women in the world but is more visible in dark-skinned people because the white vitiligo area stand out more clearly. Half of all people with vitiligo get it before the age of twenty and begins to show at first on hands and face. Many people with this disorder may feel uncomfortable around others who ask questions about their skin condition. We have at Shamá clinic treated many patients with vitiligo, which experienced a spread of the disorder during stress related events such as personal trauma and crisis.
How we treat vitiligo with Shamá method®
Before the actual treatment a test is performed on a tiny skin area. This is to see if the pigments and medical products are rejected or not by the body since some individuals with this disease do not absorb pigment in their skin. To establish this, it may be necessary to do 1-2 treatments. At every treatment, one assess if one needs to enhance the treatment effect for a satisfying result.
The vitiligo treatment begins with a sterile disposable needle that penetrates carefully the skin barely a millimeter deep and is therefore not painful. The products that are used, sinks superficially in the skin layer and acts on the treated area days after the treatment. It is important to take care of the treated area according to the instructions that are given. The tending after the treatment is an important moment for a great result.
In the final phase, it’s about recreating to the extent that the vitiligo area in tone, pattern and structure achieves harmony in color and shape with its surrounding, thus the vitiligo areas are not visible anymore and stands no longer out.
The first visit, the consultation is very important because we thoroughly examine your skin issue and anatomical preconditions. You may read more about the First visit here! You may also read more about our treatment method Shamá method® here!
How many treatments needs to be done & the time between them?
The vitiligo area is treated very carefully and the treatment is repeated at 8 to 30-day intervals depending on the characteristics of the skin area. For an assessment, a personal visit is required where the issue is examined. The treatment is repeated several times for a safe and great result. The average number of treatments is about 4-6.
